PK grew up in a relatively young city in the southeastern region of undivided Bihar. Curious by nature, he absorbed knowledge from elders, teachers, and books. A grandparent was a government teacher in undivided Bihar; neurological illness led to frequent journeys between Bhagalpur and AIIMS, Delhi.

A maternal uncle and father studied Engineering I.I.T. Madras in the Southern city of Madras, now rechristened as Chennai and B.I.T. (Bihar Institute of Technology) in Sindri, then in Bihar's Dhanbad district. His mother, Pushpa, completed 15 years of formal education, including Sundervati Mahila College, Bhagalpur. She chose Botany in her 3 yras' undergraduate education. Marriage and raising 3 kids meant she chose to stay at home.. In the 1980s, without internet access, she helped Prasoon build study material at home by copying notes and material from books, supplemented by teachers' support. In grades 11 and 12, Prasoon focused on his Board examinations while preparing for engineering entrance examinations including WB-JEE, REE and IIT-JEE. He dropped his surname, Jha, to avoid the stereotyping and ethnic associations prevalent in undivided Bihar. He pursued postal coaching, with answer sheets evaluated by professors in Dadar, Mumbai. The IIT-JEE was particularly demanding, relying heavily on three-hour subjective papers in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. Prasoon secured Rank 1 among more than 95,000 examinees and reportedly identified an error in the question paper itself. Bokaro Darpan, a city-circulated magazine, carried an interview conducted by Neelam Kumar. Coaching institutes used an old 1991 photograph in the ads.

His academic performance remained strong until a health ailment in 1996 affected his grades. Resilience helped him recover and reach the United States in August 1997.

Prasoon later returned to the country of birth and now lives in South India, travelling frequently across India, particularly Jharkhand, WB and Delhi.
